Study Suggests Plastic-Contaminated Foods Linked to Increase in Premature Births

Researchers have recently suggested a potential link between the increasing rate of premature births and the presence of synthetic chemicals known as phthalates in various consumer products. These findings come from a new study conducted by experts in the field, shedding light on a pressing concern in maternal and child health.


The Impact of Phthalates

Phthalates, often referred to as "everywhere chemicals" due to their widespread use, have been identified as hormone disruptors capable of affecting the function of the placenta—a vital organ responsible for supplying oxygen and nutrients to a developing fetus in the womb. Lead author Dr. Leonardo Trasande, director of environmental pediatrics at NYU Langone Health, highlights the role of phthalates in potentially triggering inflammation that further disrupts placental function, potentially leading to preterm labor.


Identifying the Culprit: DEHP and Similar Chemicals

Of particular concern is a phthalate called Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, or DEHP, commonly found in food packaging. Dr. Trasande emphasizes the significant association between DEHP and preterm labor, suggesting that this chemical, along with three similar compounds, could account for a notable percentage—ranging from 5% to 10%—of all preterm births in the United States in 2018.


Implications and Costs

The implications of these findings are substantial, with the study estimating nearly 57,000 preterm births in the United States alone in 2018 attributed to phthalate exposure. Furthermore, the economic impact is significant, amounting to nearly $4 billion in societal costs for that year alone, underscoring the urgency of addressing this issue.


Widespread Use and Consumer Exposure

Phthalates are widely utilized in various consumer products to enhance flexibility and durability, particularly in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) items such as children's toys. However, their presence extends beyond toys, spanning a multitude of products ranging from household items like vinyl flooring and shower curtains to personal care products including shampoos, soaps, and nail polish.
